The long version…
Jann’s experience as a small business owner and years of service on nonprofit Boards provide her with the leadership skills Yorktown needs to live up to its motto “Progress with Preservation.”
Raised in Niskayuna, NY, Jann graduated cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo. After graduation, Jann and her college sweetheart, Rajesh, moved to Co-op City in the Bronx, where they married and started their family and careers.
They settled in Yorktown with their two children, choosing Yorktown for its schools, green spaces and family-friendly atmosphere. Both kids are Yorktown High School graduates.
Jann began her career in the financial sector working for several international asset management companies. Ten years later, she turned lemons into lemonade when she was laid off as the result of a corporate merger. Using the layoff as a springboard, Jann founded Mirchandani Consulting, now Westchester Marketing Cafe, a certified woman-owned business. Her first client was – you guessed it – the same company that just laid her off!
Since moving to Yorktown nearly 20 years ago, Jann has become a well-known and passionate advocate for small businesses and nonprofits in the community.
Jann currently serves on the Board of the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce (HVGCC) and is the founding Chair of the HVGCC Equity and Diversity Committee. She is an active member of the Business Council of Westchester and the Association of Development officers. It is in this capacity that she works to connect business owners and nonprofit leaders with the resources they need to thrive.
Jann has mentored numerous small business owners formally through the Ossining Innovates business incubator program as well as informally through her extensive professional network.
Jann is no less dedicated to her civic engagement. She currently serves on the Executive Board of the Greater Hudson Valley Council Boy Scouts of America as the Council Commissioner, the first female to hold this position in the Council. She previously served on the Council Merger Task Force, responsible for completing a feasibility study and ultimately working to oversee the merger between the Westchester-Putnam Council and the Hudson Valley Council.
Being a mom and having her own business means that Jann is a project manager both professionally and personally. She is able to take a long-range view while handling short-term problems. She is a calming influence in the face of challenges.
Yorktown needs a Town Board that can do the same. That can engage with all its residents; young families and older people, transplants, and locals. Yorktown deserves a Town Board that is transparent and open and works for everyone.
That is what Jann will bring to the role of Yorktown Supervisor.
